Merrill received his B.A., cum laude with honors, from the University of Maryland in 1977, and his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in1980. Upon graduation from the University of Virginia, Merrill accepted a position as the law clerk to the Honorable William Erickson, a Justice on the Supreme Court of Colorado. In 1981, Merrill began his private practice as an associate with Levitan Ezrin West & Kerxton, specializing in bankruptcy, debtor-creditor rights, and commercial transactions.
In 1988, Merrill began his own firm, Cohen & Baldinger, and in 2004, that firm became Cohen Baldinger & Greenfeld, LLC. Merrill has served as the managing partner of this firm since its inception in 1988. Merrill is licensed to practice law in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Colorado. He has been a member of the Chapter 7 Trustee panel in Greenbelt, Maryland since 1987. He is a past President of the Bankruptcy Bar Association for the District of Maryland, and a frequent lecturer on bankruptcy issues for the Montgomery County Bar Association, MICPEL, American Bar Association, and others. He has testified as a qualified expert witness in bankruptcy matters in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland and the Circuit Court for the Montgomery County Maryland.
Merrill and his wife Karen are residents of Montgomery County.
